“A Metabolic Urge”

Written by John Greene on July 27th, 2009

I was just sitting here looking at my to-do list and saw an entry made last Friday while I was sitting in the OB’s office with my wife (son #2 is due in 10 days) and thumbing through an old Newsweek magazine:

Blog George Will June 22 Newsweek column quote about Barney Frank

Okey Dokey.

A little digging found the column online, and a little more digging jogged my memory and found the quote that I liked so much:

Nowadays, green reasoning is the first refuge of scoundrels. Global warming has become like God: It is an explanation for everything and an all-purpose excuse for the political class to do whatever it wants to do. What a large portion of it wants to do—what it has a metabolic urge to do—is boss people around. It can maximize its opportunities for doing that if it maximizes the number of people dependent on government, and the number of ways in which they are dependent.

Good God, that is absolutely one of the most money quotes I have read in a long time about the agenda of our ruling class these days, and it is so absolutely true. And you can say the same thing about healthcare “reform” (which I have been a lot lately).

“Climate Change” isn’t about saving the planet (or at least mitigating the effect on our country) and “Healthcare Reform” isn’t about making anyone healthier. Both of those goals can be achieved a lot more cheaply and easily through alternative means, so why not do things the cheaper and easier way? Because the underlying motive isn’t what they say it is. The underlying motive is controlling your life.

Wake up America.
